Diamond grading reports can easily overwhelm buyers with technical charts and specialised grading jargon. Understanding the 4 Cs—Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight—is simply about learning where your money delivers genuine visual impact and where compromises go unnoticed to the naked eye.

From our Lord Street showroom, Michael and Belinda Bakerman provide clear, transparent guidance to help you make an informed investment:

  1. Cut (The Sparkle Engine): Cut is the single most critical factor determining how brilliantly a diamond reflects light. A poorly cut stone will leak light through its base, appearing dull regardless of high clarity or colour. Prioritising an Excellent cut grade ensures your diamond delivers intense fire and scintillation across the room.

  2. Colour (The Tint Factor): Graded from D (completely colourless) through Z (noticeable yellow/brown tint). The sweet spot for exceptional value is often in the near-colourless F to H range, which appears icy white when mounted in platinum or 18ct white gold without the premium price tag of D-grade rarity.

  3. Clarity (The Purity Check): Clarity measures natural microscopic internal characteristics (inclusions). While collectors seek Flawless stones, VS1–SI1 (Very Slightly / Slightly Included) diamonds are typically “eye-clean”—meaning inclusions are invisible without a 10x jeweller’s loupe, freeing up budget for cut or size.

  4. Carat (The Weight, Not the Sparkle): Carat refers purely to weight, not physical diameter. A well-proportioned diamond will often look larger than a heavier stone cut too deep.

Grading certificates from laboratories such as the GIA or IGI provide verification, but diamonds should always be examined in person. We invite you to view loose stones and finished pieces side-by-side in our relaxed Lord Street showroom.
